TREAT-54 Scholarship Program
Hugh Danston Davis Memorial Academic Scholarship
Hugh Danston Davis was born in Sav la mar in 1965. He migrated to Brooklyn New York along with his 3 siblings to join their parents in 1973. Hugh attended Samuel J. Tilden High school and played varsity football as a quarterback and a running back before attending college at SUNY at Albany where he was on the football team for a few years. He loved sports and was good at both football and baseball. While at Albany he pledged Phi Beta Sigma fraternity and took on the name of 14 Karat. Hugh graduated with a BSc in Finance but always dreamed of becoming a lawyer although his father wanted him to be a medical doctor. Following his dream, Hugh was accepted to Syracuse Law School and graduated in 1991 with his Juris Doctorate. He successfully completed the New York Bar exams on his initial attempt. Hugh loved being around people and was most delighted in talking with young adults and children. He coached Little League baseball and volunteered with children at the YMCA where he mentored and tutored high school children. Hugh loved life, he lived every moment with enthusiasm. Everyone loved being in his company because when he was around there was going to be fun. He made you laugh and feel better about yourself. His smile and infectious laughter were always welcoming. Hugh received glowing commendations from his supervisors and we all knew that he was “going places.”
On a sunny Saturday in June the family were notified that Hugh was the victim of accidental drowning while he was fishing with friends along the banks of the Schiaticoke River in Albany, New York. At the time of his death he was a staff lawyer employed with the Legal Division of the New York State Department of Health.
Hugh was always close to his Jamaican relatives and friends and visited them many times over the years. The family wishes to formalize all the assistance that has been offered over the years in this scholarship that bears his name and that will help students who have a demonstrated commitment to helping their communities.
We believe that if everyone does something to help someone in the many little communities around Jamaica it will change the lives of people who desperately need the help. We firmly believe that by lending a hand we can offer a smile. Hugh did not attend High school in Jamaica but after some consideration the family decided to offer the scholarships to Godfrey Stewart High School since that school was very instrumental in opening many doors for their sister and in a sense the entire family.
